4 ESSENTIAL RHYTHMS FOR YOUTH

Take away: 4 rhythms from around the world and the ability to teach them to all age groups.

Length: 1-3.5hrs

What: This Workshop will explore four rhythms from around the world. Each Rhythm will be delivered in a three level progression that will allow you to teach the same rhythms to Kindergarten through Grade 9.

Additionally:

  • Each rhythm will be presented with: rhythm notation, Kolday rhythm language (Ta, Ti, Tika), language of the djembe (Gun, Go, Pa), mnemonics, and audio recording.
  • 5 technique pitfalls to avoid
  • Rudiments to improve technique.
  • Teaching to different abilities and learning styles

What do you need? A drum, if you don’t have one bring a box (a smaller box that can fit between your legs will be most comfortable). Also bring a wood, bell or shaker (or something that is similar).

DRUM CIRCLE FACILITATION FOR YOUTH

Take away: How to apply drum circle techniques to different age groups

Length: 1-3.5hrs

What: Learn fundamental drum circle techniques and how to apply them to different age groups. Each facilitation technique will be paired with a three level progression to adapt to Kindergarten through grade 9.

Techniques:

  • Call and echo
  • Stops and Starts
  • Sculpting
  • Layering

What do you need? A drum, if you don’t have one bring a box (a smaller box that can fit between your legs will be most comfortable). Also bring a wood, bell or shaker (or something that is similar).

GAMESFOR YOUTH

Take away:
You will come away with 3-10 (depending on workshop length) original games and how to adapt them to different age groups.

Length: 1-3.5hrs

What: In this workshop we will break down different styles of games. In particular we will be exploring “Group Mastery” games, a structure designed to encourage high levels of teamwork, develop rhythmic skill-sets quickly and create a platform for playing group improv together.

FOUR PRINCIPLES OF GROUP IMPROV

What: Peak into the window of group improv for youth. When the right principles are applied, group improv can become an incredible arena for self-motivated growth and musical/social development.

Take Away: Understanding four principles of group improv, activities to apply the principles and how to use existing activities to enhance group improv 

Length: 1-3.5hrs
